Ask a Ugandan child about "the zoo in Entebbe" and their face lights up. The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre — UWEC to everyone — is one of the country's best-loved institutions, and it happens to sit on the Lake Victoria shore just minutes from our hotel. If your Uganda itinerary does not include a safari, UWEC is the best wildlife experience you can have without leaving town. If it does include a safari, UWEC is still the best introduction to what you are about to see.
Not Quite a Zoo
UWEC began in 1952 as an animal orphanage, taking in injured, orphaned and confiscated wildlife. That remains its core mission today: most residents arrived through rescue rather than purchase, and the centre doubles as Uganda's principal conservation-education institution, hosting thousands of schoolchildren every year. The enclosures are arranged as recreations of Uganda's major ecosystems — savannah, wetland and forest — so a walk through the centre is a walk through the country in miniature.
What You Will See
- The shoebill — UWEC is the most reliable place in the world to stand a few metres from this improbable, dinosaur-faced stork. For many bird lovers this alone justifies the trip to Uganda.
- Big mammals — lions, giraffes, white rhinos, buffalo and elephants on the savannah side.
- Chimpanzees — a lively troop, best watched at feeding time.
- Reptiles and small cats — pythons, crocodiles, servals and caracals in the forest and wetland sections.
Entrance Fees and Opening Hours
UWEC is open daily from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. At the time of writing, day-visit entrance fees on the centre's official rate card are:
- Foreign non-residents: $15 adults, $10 children (ages 3–14)
- East African citizens: UGX 20,000 adults, UGX 10,000 children
- Ugandan school groups (booked): UGX 8,000 per pupil
Prices and packages change from time to time — confirm current rates on the official UWEC website (uwec.ug) or with our front desk before you go.
Special Experiences
UWEC's bookable experiences are what elevate a visit from nice to unforgettable. On the current rate card: the Behind-the-Scenes tour ($70 for non-residents, UGX 50,000 for Ugandans), Keeper for a Day ($150, or $50 for juniors) helping prepare food and enrichment, the Chimpanzee Close-Up ($290) under keeper supervision, and a VIP experience ($100) with a meal included. These are popular and limited — book directly with UWEC in advance, or ask our front desk to help arrange it when you book your stay.
Practical Tips
- Time needed: two hours minimum; a half day if you take a guided tour or experiences.
- When to go: mornings, when the animals are active and school groups have not yet peaked.
- Guides: optional but excellent — the keepers know each animal's rescue story, which transforms the visit.
- Facilities: there is an on-site restaurant and lakeside seating; the paths are flat and manageable for all ages.
- Getting there: ten minutes from Airport View Hotel by taxi or boda boda along the lakeshore road.
