Airport Layover Guide — Airport View Hotel Entebbe

Entebbe International Airport (EBB) is Uganda's only international airport and the gateway for almost every visitor to the country. It is also one of the easiest airports in Africa to have a layover at — because unlike most capitals, the town of Entebbe is only minutes away, not an hour of traffic. Here is how to make the most of a stop, whether you have six hours or a full day.

First Things First: Entry Requirements

Most nationalities need a visa to enter Uganda, and you should apply for the eVisa online before you travel rather than relying on arrangements at the airport. You will also be asked for a yellow fever vaccination certificate on arrival, so keep it with your passport, not in your checked bag. If you plan to leave the airport during a layover, make sure your visa and ticket situation allows it — a single-entry visa used on a layover may complicate a return leg, so check your specific routing.

Money and SIM Cards

There are forex bureaus and ATMs in the arrivals area. The Ugandan shilling (UGX) is the everyday currency, though hotels and tour operators widely quote in US dollars. If you are changing cash, note that older or worn US dollar bills are often refused or exchanged at a worse rate — bring newer notes. MTN and Airtel both have counters at the airport where a tourist SIM with data can be registered against your passport in a few minutes.

If You Have 4–6 Hours

Do not attempt Kampala — you will spend the whole layover in a car park on the old Entebbe Road. Instead, take the ten-minute ride into Entebbe town for a proper meal and a rest. Many of our guests book a room for the day to shower and sleep between long-haul legs; our front desk is used to odd arrival hours (it is staffed 24/7) and a quick WhatsApp message is enough to arrange a day stay. A leisurely lunch of whole grilled tilapia at our restaurant beats any airport lounge.

If You Have 8–12 Hours

Now Entebbe opens up properly. Two options stand out:

  • Entebbe Botanical Gardens — a hundred-year-old lakeside garden full of monkeys and spectacular birds, ten minutes from the airport. Two to three unhurried hours. See our full guide.
  • Uganda Wildlife Education Centre — lions, giraffes, chimps and the shoebill stork in semi-natural lakeside enclosures. Three to four hours well spent. See our UWEC guide.

Either combines comfortably with lunch in town and still leaves a generous buffer to get back through security.

If You Have 24 Hours

Visitors at the Uganda Equator monument, a popular day trip

With a full day you can take one of Entebbe's signature excursions: a boat trip to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, or a dawn canoe safari in Mabamba Swamp to look for the shoebill. With a car and driver you can even make the run to the Uganda Equator monument at Kayabwe, about 90 minutes away, for the classic photo with a foot in each hemisphere. All are best booked or arranged a day ahead — our reception can point you to reliable operators. Spend the night in a real bed, have a proper breakfast (included with all our rooms), and go back to your flight rested instead of wrecked.

Timing Your Return to the Airport

Entebbe is small, but the airport takes check-in seriously: plan to be at the terminal three hours before an international departure. From our door the drive is only a few minutes, which is exactly why transit passengers have been our core guests for years.

The Short Version

  • eVisa online in advance; yellow fever certificate in your hand luggage.
  • Change money or withdraw shillings at arrivals; get an MTN or Airtel SIM if staying connected matters.
  • Under 6 hours: rest and eat in Entebbe town. 8–12 hours: Botanical Gardens or UWEC. 24 hours: Ngamba Island or Mabamba Swamp.
  • Back at the terminal 3 hours before departure.
