Things to Do in Entebbe — Airport View Hotel Entebbe

Most travellers know Entebbe as the town where you land when you fly into Uganda. But treat it as nothing more than a transit stop and you will miss one of the most relaxed, green and genuinely enjoyable towns in East Africa. Sitting on a peninsula that juts into Lake Victoria, Entebbe was the seat of the colonial government before independence, and it still carries that unhurried, garden-town character today.

Here are ten things our guests ask about most — all within easy reach of the hotel.

1. Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC)

Often called the "Entebbe Zoo", UWEC is far more than a zoo. Founded in 1952 as a sanctuary for orphaned and rescued animals, it is home to lions, giraffes, chimpanzees, rhinos and the famous shoebill stork, all kept in large enclosures that mimic Uganda's natural ecosystems. If you only have one free morning in Entebbe, spend it here. Read our full UWEC guide for details.

2. Entebbe Botanical Gardens

Laid out in 1898 on the shore of Lake Victoria, the botanical gardens are a beautiful mix of manicured lawns, tropical rainforest and lakeshore. Expect to see colobus and vervet monkeys, and more bird species in two hours than many people see in a year. Our Botanical Gardens guide covers everything you need to know.

3. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

About 23 km offshore from Entebbe, Ngamba Island is a forested sanctuary caring for orphaned chimpanzees rescued from across East Africa. Half-day and full-day boat trips run from Entebbe and are best booked a day or two in advance. Watching the chimps come in for feeding time, metres away across a raised walkway, is a highlight of many visitors' entire Uganda trip.

4. Shoebill Tracking at Mabamba Swamp

Birdwatchers travel across the world for one bird above all: the prehistoric-looking shoebill stork. Mabamba Bay, a Ramsar-listed wetland on Lake Victoria, is one of the most reliable places anywhere to see one. Local guides pole you through papyrus channels in a wooden canoe at dawn — an unforgettable experience even if you have never owned a pair of binoculars.

5. The Beaches of Lake Victoria

Entebbe's public beaches — Aero Beach, Lido Beach and others along the peninsula — are popular with local families, especially on Sundays. The atmosphere is lively: music, grilled fish, and views across the world's second-largest freshwater lake. Swimming is generally not recommended, but the beaches are great for an afternoon of people-watching and fresh tilapia.

6. Entebbe Golf Club

Established in 1900, the Entebbe Golf Club is the oldest golf course in East Africa. The nine-hole lakeside course welcomes visiting players, and even non-golfers enjoy a drink at the clubhouse overlooking fairways where marabou storks stand in as spectators.

7. Craft Markets and Local Shopping

The craft village near the town centre sells baskets, bark-cloth products, carvings and fabrics made by artisans from across Uganda. Prices are negotiable and friendly bargaining is expected — start around two-thirds of the first asking price and enjoy the conversation.

8. Boat Trips and Sport Fishing

Local operators run sunset cruises and Nile perch fishing charters from the Entebbe waterfront. Nile perch here can exceed 100 kg, and even a fruitless afternoon on the water is a fine way to see the peninsula from the lake.

9. Uganda Reptile Village

A short drive from town, this small community-run sanctuary houses snakes, chameleons, tortoises and monitor lizards, most of them rescued. The guided tours are informative and refreshingly honest about which Ugandan snakes you should actually worry about (very few).

10. A Day Trip to Kampala

Uganda's capital is about 40 km away — roughly 45 minutes via the Entebbe–Kampala Expressway when traffic is kind. The Uganda Museum, the Kasubi Tombs, the craft markets on Buganda Road and the Gaddafi National Mosque all make worthwhile stops. See our transport guide before you set off.
